Read Inside the Killing Machine
Respond to the following:
1. Summarize the article into 1-2 paragraphs
2. comment on the following
- Do you think President Obama's actions are legal? Why or why not?
- Why do you think President Obama uses the Predator strikes a lot more than President Bush?
- In the article the "lethal operation" decisions made by the President and Mr. Rizzo are described as morally complex. Describe how you would handled the moral complexities of the decision if you were in Mr. Rizzo's shoes

  1. In my opinion, as long as the killings were legal and there was no collateral damage, then I have no problem with this. The people that were being killed by these predator drones were suspected terrorists that could potentially kill American citizens. The man was just doing his job. If I was in his shoes, I would also have retired because of all the flack that he was getting from everyone abut how he was a "murderer." he was just doing his job, and somebody had to do it.

  2. I am okay with what they did because those people are know terrorists and if they were not killed, they could have possibly killed many Americans. I also think it is great that they can search/scan over areas from thousands of miles away and kill a terrorist/enemy of the United States. By doing this i think it keeps the public safer and soldiers safer so that they don't have to go into those situations Rizzo should not be disappointed about what he did and if he did not do it someone else would have. Rizzo should let it go and not worry about what people are saying because i think he did the right think and the U.S.a will benefit from it.

  3. These decisions must be difficult for a lawyer such as Mr.Rizzo to make. They are the decisions that are better suited for soldiers to handle. If I were in Rizzo's shoes If i chose to stay in that position I'd have to think of myself as a soldier in the war on terrorism. That being said I am a little surprised that this has not become front page news. President Bush was vilified for using enhanced interrogation techniques. I was ok with his decisions and I'm ok with Pres. Obama's increased use of lethal operations. I am just pointing out how the media especially on the left killed Bush yet is ignoring President Obama's more ruthless policy

  4. I honestly do not know how Rizzo did it. I know that if I was told to sit in an office day after day and just blow up suspected terrorists. In order for me to do that I would need to know specific details about each person and why I am killing them. I do not know how he goes through his life and just goes on with his day after killing person after person. I give him a lot credit because I know that many people would not do anything he did.

  5. I think that Rizzo made the right choices in his decision making process. As long as the killings were legal and it was not effecting anyone except the man they were llooking for then i agree with his decision. The people who were being killed were a threat to Americ and Rizzo was only protecting our country. If i were in his placeI would have done the same things. It is wrong for people to call him a murderer for protecting our country.

  6. I feel that the act of carrying out these lethal operations is legal and effective, but the issue is the morality of the situation. These lethal operation strikes are effective and ethical if the target is a confirmed threat or terrorist. If the target is only a suspected terrorist, then it should not be used. The Predator should be used for more surveillance rather than an actual strike in the case of a suspect. Overall, I agree with the use of Predator surveillance and strikes if they are used and executed appropriately and responsibly.

  7. In my opinion it isn't that big of a deal. He didn't go around killing innocent people for fun. The killings were all legal and all killed people that they suspected would kill us. It was his job to go out and kill the people that he thought would be a danger to our lives and he did it. I don't blame him though for retiring for all the blame being put on him but i don't think he did anything wrong.

  8. I think his actions are legal. We are fighting a war on terrorism so it makes sense that we use are weapons to kill terrorists. and this is the best way to do it. we are not risking any American lives. and if you cant get any information from the terrorists then what is the point of capturing them?

  9. I feel that killing suspected terrorist is wrong. If they are wrongly accused you cud be killing someone's father and husband. i think everyone deserves a chance to be tried. This should not be allowed to happen. also if you kill them how would you identify who exactly they were.

  10. Mr. Rizzo was doing his job, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is better to stop a threat then to let it grow. The consequences should not be felt. He did what was right for the country.

  11. i think that the drones are a successful way to eliminate any suspected terrorists. Its a clean way to get rid of any threats towards United States soil.

  12. In my opinion, it was okay to do since it was legal. If there was a law against it then thats when it would be wrong. People are also missing the point that the killings were done to benefit the citizens. The only way someone should be arrested or stopped is if they are just killing innocent people. In the other hand I personally wouldn't be able to do it, but if someone else wanted to do it then I wouldn't stop them.

  13. if i were in mr, rizzo's i wouldnt care about what others were calling me such as a murderer because he is doing a job to keep all of the united states citizens safe and is killing off those who will come together and plan a plot to destroy america.

  14. I personally think if somebody is suspected to be a terrorist there needs to be a certain amount of evidence proving it. I don't think I would have trouble doing Rizzo's job. Rizzo does a job that not many can do there is probably a significant amount of stress. I don't think what Rizzo has done is murder because he is killing these people to protect our country

  15. In my opinion i would agree with rizzo, he was doing his job. His job seems very stressful and he needs to make dicisions that he think is right. Even if people disagree with the disicion. Hes being called a murderer but hes helping our country in every way he could.

  16. Anthony Buckmaster. I personly feel that this process of eleminating enemy targets is good. It allows us to acomplish our mission without risking the lives of american soldiers. I think that Mr.Rizzo is doing his job and he should not be harassed or viewed negatively for doing this. These people can do so much more damage the killing one person so if we eliminate him to save lives I feel that it is ok. So yes I agree with obamas actions and feel that it should be legal

  17. If I were Mr.Rizzo I would not let politics and what other people think of me affect my decisions to keep this nation safe. The killings were done to noninnocent people who were seemed as a threat to society. I think its the most safe Nd sufficient way to get rid of threats.

  18. I am okay with what is going on this article, but I could never do what Mr. Rizzo is doing. If you are eliminating terrorists, than I believe you are saving other lives from future harm. The only thing is, you would need to know that these people are terrorists so you do not accidently kill a innocent victim.

  19. I think that what Mr. Rizzo is doing is okay. I think that he is doing it for the better of the country and if he is doing it to keep our country safe I don't see why it's a problem. I think that he was just long his job. I don't think he's a murderer at all, I think he's trying to keep his country safe from terrorists.

  20. i think that if i was this guy i would be able to do the job, however it is a lot to handle and hide from others. i believe that he wasnt a murderer he was just doing his job how he was told to do it and should not be punished in any way shape or form. it is mainly the governments fault for giving him the orders to kill.

  21. I think Mr.Rizzo is doing the right thing. If i was him i do not know if i would be able to go through with it but i admire him for being able to do it. I don't believe he is a murderer due to the fact that he kills the people far enough so that no one is in harm or we don't see it. I do feel bad that he has to deal with peoples negative comments towards him, but what these people don't get is, he did this to protect them.
